Mvelopes.com Website Review & Ratings + Mvelopes Coupons

Mvelopes.com is an online money management program that mimics the age-old envelope money management trick. The platform allows the user to connect online banking information from several institutions into a single database of the user's ingress and egress. The user then can make various "envelopes" into which to organize money and with which to make and meet savings and debt management goals. The site is set up like any bank's online banking website, is supported by all major banks as well as many smaller banks (which the user can search before signing up), and is protected by Secure Socket Layering.

Mvelopes: What makes it different?
  • All clients can take advantage of the obligation-free 14-day free trial, and there is a free debt analysis on the site for all visitors.
  • All work is done in the site's online environment, so the client doesn't have to purchase Money or Quicken for the computer and constantly update the versions, nor send information between online and desktop management software.
  • There is online bill pay, and users can set up automatic transactions in the same fashion as at a bank website.
  • The site can connect to all major banks, as well as a variety of smaller banks, which the user can search for before signing up.
Mvelopes vs. primary competitors (sites similar to Mvelopes)

A very informative review at About.com suggests that it may be advantageous with regard to ease of use that Mvelopes doesn't have all the intricate features of Quicken or Money, as it allows Mvelopes to be more intuitive and straightforward. Likely because of this, the reviewer also states that Mvelopes isn't geared toward debt management, though one could presumably start an infinite number of envelopes for debt payments, as suggested by Mvelopes' website.

Several sites have reported complaints about how the client must, if not interested in pursuing a subscription, cancel the free trial before it ends. At the time of this writing it's a 14-day trial, though in the past it's been 30 days in length. A credit card number must be entered before downloading the free trial (a practice, albeit common, not used by competitors Money Management International and Mint), and it will be billed at the end of the free trial for a subscription if the service is not declined first.

However, Mint doesn't allow the user to move money, where Mvelopes does, as long as the user's bank allows Mvelopes access to its programs. Users should get used to the term FI (financial institution, as used on these sites), which means "bank."

Mvelopes: Customer reviews & comments

Mvelopes is best suited for households who want to save money for future goals like college tuition; married couples who want to be able to pool their separate financial accounts onto a single, easily-managed platform; people who want to get serious about debt management; people who want to do online banking and money management without a desktop program like Quicken; or even people in all of these situations at once. Many reviews have also suggested that young people out of college or working their first job should also use the service.

A testimonial on the website from Iowa reports the following: "It is so easy to use and understand. I actually look forward to our “budget meetings” now! ... We have eliminated $30,000 in debt in just the last year, and we are on a fast track to eliminating all of our debt except for our mortgage by next July."

With regard to the flexibility of online banking, a review on epinions said this: "I just finished setting up my account for the free trial and had problems with my bank not being accepted. I used the email and  Mvelopes extended my trial by 30 days ... now all is working fine."

Mvelopes: Detailed review

Mvelopes, now also known as Finicity Money Manager, is an online money management system designed to help the user organize money expense toward savings and debt management goals. The software mimics the age-old envelope money saving trick. The service costs $189.60 for a two-year deal ($7.90/month), $129.60 annually ($10.80/month) or $39.60 quarterly ($12.30/month).

The company has an A+ grade at the Better Business Bureau and is open to the public through social media. Clients can see where Mvelopes has been in the news, blog about the service and submit success stories.
